Whilst adhering to the Brecon Beacons National Park Planning Departments requirement to design a ‘ typical’ stone fronted house, we also took full advantage of the plots South facing country side views.

Locally sourced natural Blue Pennant stone is used on the front elevation with the remaining elevations finished with painted float finished render enhanced with natural stone cills.

Large windows and French doors with a double height glazed entrance vestibule provide a wonderful light and airy entrance to this contemporary home.

The design exploits passive solar gain which shines onto the rear of the house from mid morning to early evening, with the two storey atrium to act as a heat store, drawing in the warmth into the core of the building which rises up to the first floor level. The glazed space acts as a hinge in centre of the L shaped accommodation, which is arranged to be as open plan as possible.

With no doors to close between the spaces, heat from the sun may travel unhindered throughout the house.

This use of solar heat together with under floor heating to both floor provides a very thermally efficient design.

As is often the case, many enquiries are from people who enjoy living in their current home and location, but need to gain extra space for their growing family. This project was a typical example.

Our clients wanted to increase their kitchen dining area, as this space is becoming increasingly more popular as people adopt a more Mediterranean lifestyle, with open plan living extending onto a sun deck.

Large areas of glazing with roof lights provide a light and airy space to eat and entertain, with the front of the house facing South full advantage was taken, with the roof lights drawing in to evening sun from the West.

The large French doors open up onto a large decked area, which provides a modern open plan living experience.

After the project was completed our clients forwarded some pictures along with their comment:

"Thought you might like to see the results of your plans. We love it, thank you."
