Daily Telegraph Value for money winner Self-build.

The trick with the value for money category is not to be seen to have cut corners - and Mike and Syvona Woods's house in the Brecon Beacons National Park absolutely meets this criterion. A double-fronted, contemporary home with a traditional, stone façade, the Woods have achieved their amazing £543 per square metre budget (most mid-range houses cost about £1,000 per sq m) by judicious use of materials and a fair amount of risk.
The land they bought for £40,000 had no planning permission, and Mike, an architectural technologist, ran the site himself, ordering materials, tweaking plans, employing tradesmen and, occasionally, labouring himself, fitting the underfloor heating when he was unable to find a plumber with adequate experience in the field.

The 15-month build has resulted in a stunning, four-bedroom family house which has incorporated huge amounts of glazing at the rear to make the most of the unobstructed views to the south. The ground floor has an easy, almost open-plan flow to the rooms, with large entrances to each room and it is hard to marry it with the small windows and rough stone-work of the front - part of the planners' conditions in agreeing to consent was that the house should have a vernacular appearance.

The Woods have managed to turn even this to their advantage by building the front wall extra thick to provide extra insulation and heat absorption which, combined with the passive solar gain at the rear, keeps the house pleasantly warm without too much extra help.
